Speaking to Healthcare IT News, Recuro Health Founder and Chief Executive Officer Michael Gorton recently sounded off on various telemedicine trends, offering his opinion on the current state of healthcare delivery, the future of the industry beyond COVID-19, and how care coordination is the key to effective telemedicine.

His virtual care company produces Digital Medical Home, a platform that enables members across the U.S. to access comprehensive healthcare services in primary and urgent care, at-home lab testing, and genomics testing, among more, from anywhere.

Gorton believes that the rise of virtual care has helped shape healthcare in general from a reactive, disease-focused model to a proactive, holistic, and patient-driven system that prioritizes finding and incorporating personalized health and wellness solutions.

As of now, virtual care methods have not only matched but far surpassed traditional health provisions and are proven to be more effective when delivered remotely. The patient-provider relationship is perhaps at its closest and strongest, bolstered by the advances in the data tech and wireless communication innovations that made remote screening and diagnostics a reality in the first place.

Care coordination, says Gorton, fuses digital and virtual care in a natural extension of leading remote care models. Centralized platforms armed with new and exciting virtual health solutions further empower physicians to take advantage of all the tools at their disposal, and the transparency of the technology improves patients’ health comprehension as well.

On the COVID-19 front, Gorton spoke of a perfect opportunity for virtual behavioural health solutions to come to the fore. Increased investment in mental health considerations means that the best virtual behavioural technologies might soon be coming to the aid of a pandemic-sick nation.
